About Me

Hey there, I’m Ian Skatu.

A playwright based in Malaysia and Singapore — known for writing stubborn plays that push too far.

I am on a rollercoaster ride to hopefully becoming a full-time playwright one day.

I’ve been in theatre for over 10 years — acting, producing, directing — and now, I’ve settled into my most favourite form: a playwright.

My work explores fractured relationships, survival instincts, and the lies people cling to when truth threatens to break them — all wrapped in distortion, contemporary grit, and theatrical disobedience.

TL;DR:

I write weird, sometimes disturbing plays that carry deep, uncomfortable truths about being human.

Why Subscribe?

This space is where I share:

  • My playwriting process

  • Honest, messy confessionals from the soul

  • Things I’m learning (and still figuring out) about writing and being an artist

I don’t claim to be a playwriting expert.
Most of what I share are lessons I’m learning in real-time — through research, reflection, readings, and failures.

Each post is part of my own learning curve.
And if you’re on your own curve too — welcome aboard!

Is It Worth It Though?

I think so.
Here’s why:

Every post is built on something:
a video I watched, a conversation I had, a script I’m reworking (some for the millionth time).

And I don’t gatekeep — I share what I learn, what I find, and what I mess up along the way. (My mum raised me right. 😂 )

For Paid Subscribers

If you’re supporting me with a paid subscription, you’ll get access to:

  • Short scripts & monologues — to read, study, or use in class

  • Worksheets and writing tools I’ve developed/found

  • My playwriting format (yes, it matters)

  • Other exclusive materials I’m creating with you in mind

And of course, different tiers will receive other different perks.

Still Not Convinced?

Ask around or ask me directly.

I’m known in the Malaysian theatre scene for opening doors, especially to young artists.

I read scripts. I give feedback. I share generously. Always have, always will.

So if you want a space that you can engage with meaningfully and not just a newsletter you archive (or god forbid delete) — I’m your guy.

And if you’re still not sure, drop me a message. Let’s talk.

But That’s Not All!

I know not everyone likes reading long-ass articles (fair, me too lol).
So I try to keep things accessible with:

  • Short paragraphs

  • Bullet points

  • Listicles

  • Clear, casual language

Prefer video or audio?
Every post comes with:

  • A YouTube video of me reading it (or Instagram @ianskatu)

  • A podcast version you can listen to on your platform of choice

Same content. Different format. You choose what’s best for you!

So thank you!

For being here, for subscribing if you have.
If you have not, just subscribe for now,
you can always change your mind later (hopefully not 😂 ).

Because every one of you helps me believe that
I can do this a little more than I did the day before.

So, really, thank YOU. 💚
